ERI SILK

Karawan has been working for over 10 years with a local Indian development organisation to create its Eri silk stoles. It brings together 200 hand looms in village homes around Calcutta. The craft combines the work of silkworm breeders, women silk spinners and weavers. This is an ancestral heritage, and every household has a loom that plays an integral part in the daily life of the house.

Vegan, non-violent silk.

Eri silk is a wild silk extracted from the cocoon of the Cynthia Riccini butterfly. Its large cocoon, ranging in colour from white to golden red, is naturally opened by the caterpillar to facilitate its metamorphosis; the silk is therefore harvested non-violently, without killing the chrysalis, then spun and woven in the same way as wool. This “peace” silk is used by Buddhist monks in India, Bhutan, Nepal and China.

This “peace” silk is the only one used by Buddhist monks in India, Bhutan, Nepal and China.

Exceptional know-how

Eri silk comes from ‘Erinda’, the Indian name for the castor bean on which the butterfly feeds. Preserving the life of the crysalid requires that each stage of manufacture be carried out by hand. The silk thread does not unwind continuously, so it is spun segment by segment. The Eshani, Azmar and Assam collections created with this collective are exceptional textiles that reflect all the vibrancy of an artisanal texture.
