KONJAC

Konjac is a perennial plant native to South-East Asia, generally grown in poor rural and mountainous areas. Since ancient times, konjac has been renowned for its virtues in food, medicine and cosmetics. To make a sponge, the konjac tuber is cut, dried and then ground into flour. Mixed with water and plant extracts or naturally coloured clays, the paste is moulded and freeze-dried, giving the sponge its specific appearance. Konjac sponges are mechanically packaged and subjected to a repeated freezing and drying process.

The benefits of konjac sponges

Very pleasant to use on a daily basis and suitable for all skin types, the vegetable konjac sponge is an innovative ecological skincare solution for cleansing and make-up removal. Used with or without soap, Karawan's organic konjac sponge deeply cleanses the skin, tightens pores and stimulates blood micro-circulation. The starch naturally contained in konjac has an absorbent action that is both delicate and effective. It rids the skin of dead cells and eliminates excess sebum. Simply apply to the face and enjoy the hydrating sensation.

A close partnership with organic growers

Karawan has joined forces with a pioneering organic farming industry in the Yunnan province of China to produce its konjac sponge. Communities of farmers have been growing konjac on the hilly slopes for several decades. It is estimated that only a few hundred hectares of organic konjac are grown in China. After harvesting, the tubers are delivered by each farmer to collectors and then sent to the small milling workshop. The raw flour is then sent to a shaping workshop to be refined and transformed into sponge.

Organic konjac is grown under the supervision of independent organic certification bodies with local representatives. Karawan is developing a partnership with Kalys, a French company involved in training farmers in China, Thailand and Myanmar. Around 1,000 families benefit directly from this organic cultivation.
