ERI SILK

For over ten years, Karawan has been working alongside a local development NGO in India to manufacture its Eri silk stoles. This network brings together 200 looms in village homes around Calcutta. Each fabric is the result of a collective effort by silkworm breeders, women spinners and weavers. A living craft, handed down from generation to generation, where the loom is an integral part of household life.

Unrivalled wild silk

Eri silk comes from the Cynthia Riccini butterfly, which naturally pierces its cocoon when it hatches. Unlike other silks, it is harvested without killing the chrysalis. This non-violent process makes it a ‘silk of peace’, soft and worked like wool, highly prized by vegans.

This “peace” silk is the only one used by Buddhist monks in India, Bhutan, Nepal and China.

Exceptional expertise

Eri takes its name from ‘Erinda’, the castor oil on which the butterfly feeds. Because the fibre does not unwind continuously, each thread is worked by hand, segment by segment. This artisanal care gives Eri silk a unique, deep, vibrant texture. The Eshani, Azmar and Assam collections, born of this cooperation, embody all its uniqueness.
