Woven from wild Eri silk, known as the “silk of peace”, Azmar is distinguished by its tight weave and squared, sometimes irregular patterns, the hallmark of exceptional craftsmanship. Mixed models with variations in the colours wheel/orange and blue/purple, which intermingle to create a piece of remarkable design.

The Azmar stole from Karawan is a tightly woven stole made from strong, wild silk yarn that retains warmth and feels soft and cosy. This collection of stoles features repeated grid patterns. The ends are adorned with tapered, hand-knotted fringes that reinforce the handmade, natural look of the fabric.
Available in 2 shades (violet blue, orange red, etc.) in 60 x 200.
The silk stole is spun and woven by hand in India by a group of weavers involved in a social economy organisation. For a decade, Karawan has been developing its collections in partnership with these remarkable craftsmen.

SILK ERI
For over ten years, Karawan has been working with a local development organisation in India to create its Eri silk stoles. This partnership brings together almost 200 hand looms installed in village houses around Calcutta. This ancestral know-how combines silkworm rearing, spinning by women and weaving by hand. Each household has its own loom, an integral part of domestic life, passing on a living, collective tradition.
Wild and vegan silk
Eri silk comes from the cocoon of the Cynthia Riccini butterfly, whose natural hatching process respects the life cycle of the chrysalis.
Its large cocoon, ranging in colour from white to golden red, opens without human intervention. The silk is then humanely harvested, spun and woven like wool. Known as the ‘silk of peace’, it is traditionally worn by Buddhist monks in India, Bhutan, Nepal and China.

Exceptional know-how
The name ‘Eri’ comes from ‘Erinda’, the castor-oil plant on which the butterfly feeds.
To preserve the life of the chrysalis, each stage - from spinning to weaving - is carried out by hand. The discontinuous silk thread is worked segment by segment. The Karawan Eshani, Azmar and Assam collections, born of this collaboration, offer rare and vibrant textiles, imbued with authentic craftsmanship.
